Pregnancy is a joy that comes with plenty of precautions and responsibilities. Although, in the early stages, it is difficult to determine without the pregnancy test, if you have conceived; you can look for some signs and common symptoms that indicate that you may be pregnant.
In pregnancy, your body changes every week and some symptoms emerge with the changes in your body and hormone levels. However, there are also chances of these symptoms not showing up at all, as in case of some women. Here are some common symptoms to figure out; if you have conceived and you are pregnant.
Signs & Symptoms of Pregnancy
Delayed or Missed Menstrual Cycle
One of the most common symptoms of pregnancy is the delayed or missed menstrual cycle. Some women can experience the light spotting, which is much lighter than your regular periods, with just a few spots that may not last for more than a day. Also known as implantation bleeding, the spotting mainly occurs after the egg is fertilised, which can be from six to twelve days later. The spotting is normally brown or pink in color and occurs normally a few days before the period due. Approximately, 20-25 percent women experience the spotting during pregnancy.
Some women also feel the cramping; similar to the cramps during the menstrual period. There can also be a white milky discharge after conception. It is mainly, due to the growth of the cells that create the lining for the vagina. However, you can also miss your periods due to stress, fatigue or any other hormonal problems. It will be a good idea to take a home pregnancy test in case of missed menstrual cycle.
If you are sure that you are not suffering from diabetes, urinary tract infection or any such problems, or you are not consuming too much of fluid but you still have to urinate frequently, there are chances that you are pregnant. Upon conception the uterus grows and pushes the bladder, resulting into the frequent urge to urinate. Frequent urination is a common and early symptom of pregnancy, which starts normally 6 to 8 weeks after conception.
Nausea and Vomiting
Pregnancy may be accompanied by morning sickness causing nausea and vomiting. Vomiting and nausea are some of the earliest and common symptoms of conception due to the rise in hormone levels. You may feel it particularly in the morning after you get up.
Morning sickness normally appears after two to eight weeks of conception. Some women experience the evening sickness as well. But, it may also happen due to food poisoning or any other disorders. It will be wiser to visit your doctor if you are planning for a baby and experiencing nausea and vomiting.
Tender or Sore Breasts
From one to six weeks of pregnancy, sore or tender breasts are also common symptoms of pregnancy. The hormonal changes in the body cause increase in the blood flow to your breasts, making the tissues more sensitive, tender and swollen. It is one of the most common signs of pregnancy. Sore breasts can also be a sign of menstrual cycle to begin, or can also be caused due to hormonal problems or birth control pills.
Fatigue and Exhaustion
from one to six months, unexplainable and extreme fatigue can be a symptom of pregnancy. A rise in progesterone can make the expecting mother sleepy. You may feel sleepy in odd hours and it can happen as early as a week after ovulation. However, it can also be due to stress or mental strain. Visit your doctor to confirm pregnancy causing fatigue and exhaustion.
Food Cravings and Aversions
Food craving and aversions are some of the most common pregnancy signs that you may experience during pregnancy. You may have sudden but intense food cravings and urges, when you are pregnant. Similarly, there may be strong aversion for the food items that you may like before conceiving.
This is mainly due to the rise in beta-hCG hormones in your body. If you feel such aversions or cravings, visit your doctor to confirm pregnancy.
Darkening of Areola
Pay attention and check, if the area around your nipples is getting darker. This is a key symptom of pregnancy, which starts from 1 to 14 weeks of conception and lasts for the complete duration of pregnancy till delivery. The areola not only gets darker, but also grows in diameter. This way, your body starts preparing itself for breast feeding. However, a hormonal imbalance can also result into the darkening of areola, so visit your gynaecologist to confirm pregnancy.
Backaches and Headaches
Backaches and headaches are also common symptoms of pregnancy; but it normally doesn’t occur until second and third trimester. Constipation, implantation cramping and bloating can cause backaches during pregnancy. As your uterus grows in pregnancy; it can result into backaches. Backache can also happen due to physical strain, and eye strain or dehydration can cause headache. Do take an appointment with your doctor, if you experience it quite often, to confirm pregnancy.
Although, this is not a very common sign of pregnancy; some women may feel the breath shortness after pregnancy due to the growth of embryo.
However, if the shortness of breath is associated with any kind of pain, or if you feel there is something more serious to it, rush to your doctor.
Sensitivity to Smells
After conception, you may dislike some scents that you used to like before. This is due to the change in body that is taking place after pregnancy. All you can do is –avoid the fragrances that are making you queasy. The heightened sense of smelling can be attributed to the increase in estrogen levels.
During pregnancy, the rise in the level of progesterone can make your digestive system slow to cause constipation. Although, not a very clear symptom of pregnancy; constipation is one of the early signs for some women.
Very common in the first trimester, mood swing is an early and common symptom of pregnancy due to change in the hormones.
Fainting or Dizziness
Some woman also experience dizziness and fainting as the early symptom of pregnancy.
