Skin pigmentation refers to the natural color of an individual’s skin. Healthy skin has an even tone or color. However, in the event of injury and / or illness, a person’s skin tone may change drastically. The skin tone or the natural color of the skin may take on a darker hue. The sudden darkening of patches of skin is referred to as hyper-pigmentation.
Hyper-pigmentation is an extremely common and harmless skin problem, which is characterized by the appearance of uneven dark patches on an otherwise even skin tone. Hyper-pigmentation is the result of overproduction of melanin. Melanin is the pigment produced by specific group of cells known as melanocytes. This pigment is responsible for giving our skin, hair and even our irises their unique color.
