Advantages -

The major advantage and motive why women consume contraceptive pills, is to avoid pregnancy. Such pills are effectual, provided you take them dutifully and not even a single pill is missed. If the pill is not used in the correct way, then it becomes ineffective.

A few women take these pills not to prevent pregnancy, but to regulate their menstrual cycle. That happens in the following manner. The bleeding reduces, and the periods become regular. This means that the cycle becomes consistent.

The pain in the pelvic area subsides and the mood swings are in check. A lot of research vouches that birth control pills prevent the growth of cancer in the uterus and the ovaries. It also minimizes the problems related to acne.

Disadvantages -

Consumption of oral contraceptive pills may not cause heart attacks, but then, there are a lot of chances of blood clotting. Contraceptive pills also increase the chance of ischemic stroke. It is because in the earlier days, the pills contained a high dose of estrogen.

Nowadays the estrogen level in the pills is considerably reduced. These pills can result in headache and migraine. Venous thromboembolism is an unusual condition, where the blood clots and there is pain and swelling. It occurs mostly in the deep veins of pelvis or legs.

The advantages and disadvantages vary depending on the type of pill consumed. Depending on the medical composition of the pill, the following health hazards may occur.

a) When the estrogen content is high in the pill, it increases the glucose content in the blood, resulting in severe diabetes. So it worsens the situation, if you already have blood sugar.

b) You become more prone to diseases of gall bladder.

c) Estrogen also results in over saturation of cholesterol, which ends up in formation of gallstones.

d) These pills do not reduce the chances of sexually transmitted viruses.
