The correct wavelength of the laser excites the photosensitizer to release reactive oxygen molecules.
This treatment can be done either internally or externally. For external treatment, the photosensitizer is applied topically and then it is excited with the help of the laser. This treatment can be done in case of skin conditions like acne, wrinkles, skin cancers and psoriasis.
And in case of internal treatment, the photosensitizer or the levulan is applied intravenously and then, the laser light is applied using fibre optics and endoscopes. This type of treatment is chosen for treating cancerous cells close to the surface of the skin.
