Most of us have experienced an stomach upset some time or the other. An unsettled stomach can be painful and caused by a number of conditions. At times it may even be accompanied by nausea, acidity or vomiting. The discomfort caused due to an occasional stomach upset is temporary and nothing serious.
Most often when the upset stomach is caused due to an offending food item the body heals itself by eliminating the spoilt food item through vomiting or loose motions. Once the body gets rid of the offending food, the stomach settles on it’s own. These home remedies will help you cope with the illness and make you feel better in a very short time.
Here are some home remedies that will soothe the stomach and reduce the number of trips to the washroom ! These will also provide the necessary hydration and nutrition required during those days.
Effective Home Remedies For Upset Stomach
Our grandmother’s would often tell us that a banana binds the stomach and eases an upset stomach. Well, there is no doubt that our grandmother’s were right in saying so. Banana is easily digestible and the pectin present in it firms the bowel movement.
Apple Or Apple Sauce
Contrary to the belief that apples help in clearing the stomach and therefore, should not be consumed when the stomach acts queasy, apples help in reducing the symptoms of diarrhoea. The pectin in apples acts as a binding agent and helps firm the stool. They can be had as such, eaten raw or cooked or stewed after removing the skin. Cooking would help release the pectin and make it easily digestible.
Most people believe that dairy is something they should restrict or abstain from during a gastro-intestinal episode but yoghurt containing active culture or probiotic or simply put our humble curd or dahi that is set in most of our homes is a storehouse of good bacteria or gut friendly bacteria.It aids digestion and soothes the stomach and intestinal lining.
Most importantly, it replenishes the healthy or good bacteria in the gut or intestine that is essential to maintaining good health and immunity. Yoghurt is a rich source of B – comlex vitamins because of the active cultures present in it. That’s why it also helps in stomach upset caused while taking some kind of medicines especially antibiotics.
It is advisable to have a b-complex supplement along with an antibiotic but it is better to take it in the natural form and what better than consuming a healthful serving of youghurt ! It eases bloating and soothes the stomach.
Avoid black tea or green tea as they act as digestive aids or laxative. However, herbal tea like peppermint or chamomile can be had. Peppermint eases nausea and pain and soothes the colon. Chamomile can relieve an upset stomach.
Many of us are not aware that papaya eases indigestion. It is considered to correct constipation and aid in digestion. It is usually thought of as a digestive aid or a laxative. But it helps in correcting indigestion as well.
The enzymes papain and chymopapain present in papaya help break down proteins and soothe the stomach by providing a healthy acidic environment. Choose ripe papaya and not raw one.
When the tummy goes topsy-turvy foods like white rice and potato help soothe the tummy. The high starch foods absorb water and add bulk to the stool.
Ginger works well against nausea and improves digestion. Have weak ginger tea or chew on a piece of fresh ginger. you can even add dry ginger powder to the tea or have ginger candy 4-5 times a day.
Lemon In Warm water Or Plain Water
It is important to keep yourself hydrated as diarrhoea and vomiting can set in dehydration. To prevent this, squeeze the juice of half a lemon in warm water, add a teaspoon of honey and drink. This eases acidity.
In plain or room temperature water add lemon juice, a pinch or 1/4 tsp of salt and 1-2 tsp sugar. You can have this minus the lemon also. This works like an oral rehydration solution and helps balance electrolytes which is very important and necessary.
Curd With Fenugreek Seeds
I personally find this remedy very effective. Take 1/2 tsp methi or fenugreek seeds and mix in a tablespoon of curd. Don’t chew but just swallow the seeds mixed in curd.
Curd With Apple, Banana And Honey
This works wonders and is my personal favourite ! Cut an apple into cubes and slice a banana. Put this in a bowl of curd and add one – two tsp honey. This not only binds the stomach, stops loose motions but settles the tummy and gives energy and makes you feel full. Diarrhoea can really leave one weak and drained. This keeps you hydrated and provides energy.
Rice And Daal Water
Boil or pressure cook 1/4 cup daal like split moong or masoor and 1/4 cup rice with little extra water. Add salt and cook. Do not add spices. When cooked, strain the water and drink that. This provides relief and also necessary nutrition to fight infection.
Rice And Yellow Moong Khichdi
Once the number of motions reduce, gradually eat some khichdi. This should be plain without any spices. Take 1/4 cup daal like yellow moong and rice. Add salt and water and pressure cook.
This soft khichdi is just perfect for a recovering tummy ! Add some clarified butter or ghee or butter and eat. Ghee or butter is emulsified fat and soothes the irritated mucosal lining of the stomach and intestine.
Toast And Weak Tea
Bread/ toast is considered to be a non residue food which means it does not add bulk to form stool. Thus, eating toast during an upset stomach will not cause more motions but soothe the stomach. It can be had with light or weak tea made with just a teaspoon of milk.
