Keeping an animal companion is not just a recreational activity but it can also be a step towards personal improvement.
Everyone has their own reasons to bring home a pet but how should one choose the right one from the pet shop.
Here is a basic guide:
Ask yourself the following questions. Do I have enough time to dedicate to the pet? Do I need a companion or simply just something to enhance the interiors of my house? In case I am not available can I manage to get someone to take care of them? Once you have answered these question you will be able to have a better understanding.
Birds and Fishes
Birds are most easy to keep. They do not bother anyone and get used to their cage if it is larger for them to spread their wings. They eat less and their fecal matter is easier to clean. You may keep their food bowl full and leave for your office. They will eat at their own leisure time.
Same goes for fishes. You just need to change their water from to time and feeding them is no big issue.
Larger birds like parrots and eagles can live alone but some birds need to be in pair otherwise they may die of loneliness.
Guinea Pigs and other Rodents
These are extremely shy and they take time in adjusting with a new environment. They must always be in pairs since they are sensitive creatures and may become depressed easily. Male pair may fight often but the female pair is said to stay together quite peacefully. They can be tamed easily.
Likewise, rabbits and squirrels too can be kept as a pet without much hassle. The only trouble is that their cages will need regular cleaning.
Dogs and Cats
Avoid keeping a pair of cat and dog, especially when you live alone. Both of these animals need extra care. You will need to take them out for passing urine and feces. Additionally, you will need to train them. They will need a larger place to roam around which is necessary for their health.
No matter what type of animal companion you will select you must visit the vet with it at least once when you bring it home. Read as much as you can about them.
