Different Types Of Skin Infections Treatments

Different Types Of Skin InfectionsSkin infections and fungus are fairly common conditions affecting at least one in ten people across the world. While fungus generally live in the human body and are harmless, some tend to get infected and cause irritation. It is important to remember that fungus thrives on warm and moist areas.

This is why areas like the armpits, feet and groin area are most prone to fungal infections. Mild skin infections can be treated by home remedies or over-the-counter products. However, if you notice severe blistering, swelling or skin peeling, consult a dermatologist immediately. Mentioned here are several skin infections, their symptoms and how to treat them.

Five Types Of Skin Infections

Tinea Versicolor

Affecting the epidermis of the skin, this infection appears as reddish or a discolored patch, primarily on the chest or back. This fungus thrives in the oily glands; hence it mainly affects people with an active sebaceous gland.

Because it mainly affects the topmost layer of the skin, applying topical creams generally help. Depending on the severity, it may require a few weeks to heal. If the rashes turn severe, oral medications might also be required.

Tinea Versicolor1Tinea Cruris

Better known as Jock Itch, it mainly affects males and is one of the most uncomfortable and persistent skin infections. This rash is red-brown in color and first appears around the groin area before spreading to the inner thighs and anus.

In some cases it might even become raised and scaly and cause burning sensations. Jock Itch can be treated by using antifungal creams and powders on the affected areas. Since it has a tendency to recur, some precautions need to be taken.

These include wearing loose and comfortable clothing that helps to keep the skin dry and drying all areas properly and applying antifungal powder.

Tinea CrurisTinea Corporis

This is one of the most common skin infections affecting people across all ages. It is also known as ringworm and is characterized by its distinct ring-like shape. It is red in color and appears scaly. Ringworms are contagious and can be transferred from animals, towels, clothes and even soil.

Ringworms generally respond to topical creams and medication must be applied for at least three to four weeks for complete relief from the infection. Since this fungus thrives on warm places, keeping your skin dry can help prevent it.

Other precautions include washing hands if they come into contact with animals or soil, avoiding touching infections on other people and maintaining good hygiene at all times.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s Foot is the most common form of infection affecting people, particularly males. This is believed to occur in people who have a weak immune system, thus making them susceptible to infections.

Athlete’s Foot occurs as three types – Chronic Interdigital Athlete’s Foot, which is the most common form, characterized by scaling and cracking between the fingers of the feet, Moccasin-Type Athlete’s Foot, which occurs as dryness and scaling of the feet or hands soles, and Acute Vesicular Athlete’s Foot, which is recognized by painful blisters on the sole of the feet. Mild infections can be treated by creams and lotions. However, if this condition turns severe, oral antifungal medicines might also be required.

Athlete’s FootCandidiasis

This is a form of yeast infection that particularly affects the mouth, vagina, armpits, between toes and under women’s breasts. This infection grows in moist and warm areas and is more common in obese people. It appears red, has rashes and can often develop cracks and scales too. As with most skin infections, the best treatment to candidiasis is regularly using specially formulated anti-fungal creams.

Because skin infections often resemble other skin conditions, proper diagnosis is important. At the first sign of trouble, care must be taken so the infection does not spread to other parts of the body. If the symptoms appear severe or the infection becomes intolerable, immediate medical help must be sought.
