We need to consciously eat food that is healthy for our bodies. Eating the right kind of food must become a way of life for us. This will result in good nutritional health.
Exercise is good. Many of us have been exercising. Some of us have been doing so for decades. We have seen the good effects of this exercise. But it did not happen overnight. It takes time and perseverance. If I stopped suddenly, then the good effects will stop too. If I want to retain the good effects, then the exercising must become a part of my daily life. So too, eating the right and healthy kinds of food.
Healthy eating habits
Many people read magazines or view on television healthy eating habits. They get enthralled and right away go on a diet. But what the magazines and television rarely do is to tell you how to make it a way of life. Hence, when tempted by attractive and tasty food, the good resolutions go down the drain and they go back to their old lifestyle of eating unhealthy food.
What is a habit?
How do you define a ‘habit’? Some synonyms convey this idea to us – routine, practice, tradition, and pattern. From these words we understand, that a habit is not a ‘one time’ thing. Brushing our teeth is a habit. We do it twice a day. So too, with eating healthy. It is not a ‘one time’ thing. Rather it should be a practice and we will be in the pink of health.
Poor eating habits
Many of us as children have developed wrong eating habits. We have probably eaten the wrong kind of food. When we become adults, it is difficult to break these old habits. As the saying goes, ‘old habits die hard’.
Why is food consumed?
We eat for two reasons – one, to give us energy and the other is because we like to. The three senses involved in our eating for the sheer joy of it – are sight, smell and taste. On seeing something attractive, the three senses are activated. It is rather unfortunate, that most of what appeals to these three senses are not what is good for our bodies. Hence, we need wisdom to make the right selections for the food we eat – not food that appeal, but food that is wholesome.
There is nothing such as ‘boring food’. Most of the advertisements, give emphasis to the wrong types of food, so good, wholesome and healthy food like grains, fruits and vegetables are laid aside. If advertising dealt more with the goodness in healthy food, people will be inspired to eat it.
