Before I start writing about keloids, let me tell you this interesting story about what led me to write on keloids. I am a super big fan of Harry Potter series. And that famous scar of Harry Potter induced me to do some scientific research on scars.
And while studying scars, I came across this disease called keloids. And then, I realized that scars are not fancy tunes, but in fact are much serious notes. Keloid is a scar which is formed due to abnormal multiplication or overgrowth of granulation tissues (or collagen type 3) beyond the normal wound. It normally forms as a raised, shiny and fibrous nodule which may be pink or red-brown in color.
Keloid may develop at the site of severe injury, at portions which undergo surgery, or may be caused due to pimples, insect bites, burnings or excessive scratching of skin. Keloids are non-infectious and benign in nature. However, they are accompanied with uncomfortable symptoms such as inflammation, pain, itchiness, irritation, distort skin texture and make that portion appear ugly.
Effective Home Remedies For Keloids
The main difference between scar and keloid is that while former disappears with time, keloids are there to stay forever – making it a dreadful disorder.
Hence, if the symptoms of keloids are very averse, one has to resort to various medical treatments such as radiation therapy, surgery, intralesional steroids, silicone sheets, and others to get rid off them. Apart from these treatments, there are various home remedies which may prove highly beneficial in getting relief from this painful disease.
Lemon contains rich extracts of vitamin C and other natural antioxidants which help in restoring the healthiness of the skin.
Simply apply raw lemon juice on the scar and leave it for about 30 minutes. Slowly wash it off with slightly warm water. Lemon juice should be applied once daily for best results.
Apple Cider Vinegar
It is one of the best home remedies to mellow down the symptoms of keloid. Directly apply apple cider vinegar on the affected area and softly massage over it.
Within few minutes, the skin will absorb it. This process can be repeated again to fasten the healing process. However, if your skin is very sensitive and if it is causing irritation on application, apple cider vinegar should be first diluted with water and then be applied.
Sandalwood And Rose Water
Both these ingredients have shown promising results in fading the keloids. Prepare a thick paste from sandalwood powder and rose water. Clean the affected area with lukewarm water and apply the paste, leaving it overnight and washing it off in the morning.
Sandalwood will help in forming new skin cells and rose water will act as a skin toner. Powder of black gram can also be added in the paste for enhanced effect. You will soon observe the effective results of this paste in one to two months, if used regularly. Isn’t the remedy really convincing?
Aloe Vera is trusted world-wide as a natural agent for skin exfoliation. It is also very useful remedy in keloids. Clean the affected area with lukewarm water and apply freshly squeezed Aloe Vera gel on it. Leave it for about half an hour and wash it off.
You can apply Aloe Vera based on its availability – i.e. once or twice a day. Within few weeks of using Aloe Vera, you will discover lightening of the scar, reduced pain and skin irritation.
Garlic helps in treating keloids by eliminating the root-cause of it. Garlic thwarts the abnormal multiplication of fibroblast cells.
Just apply garlic oil or crushed raw garlic juice on the affected area and wash off with water after 10-15 minutes. In case, it causes irritation, wash it off immediately and don’t resort to this remedy again.
Lavender oil is a very useful cure in keloids. Not only it helps in skin cell rejuvenation, but also helps in increasing the skin cell turn over rate – which thereby stops scars from being permanent.
Simply massage gently with lavender oil on the affected area from four-five times in a day. For better results, any one of olive oil, coconut oil or tea tree essential oil can be mixed with lavender oil in equal proportion and can be used.
All these home remedies successfully help in keeping the skin healthy, hydrated and renewed. Apart from these, citrus foods which are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin E such as orange, pineapple, and sweet lime, should also be taken in suitable amounts. These foods help in maintaining the collagen level and connective tissues in the body, thereby effectively treating keloids.
