Home Remedies For Nasal Congestion

nasal congestion in womenA stuffy nose can be one of the most annoying things to contend with if one is suffering from a cold or flu. Nasal congestion can also occur due to clogged sinuses. Not only can it prevent you from breathing with ease but it can get in the way of a good night’s sleep.

Over the counter decongestants are often recommended by doctors. However they are full of chemicals and in most cases they create intense withdrawal, making the patient even more dependent on them. The other solution is to ease the discomfort with the help of simple home remedies.

Effective Home Remedies For Nasal Congestion

Steam Inhalation

Even doctors have become ardent followers of this remedy and are recommending this treatment to all their patients. Steam inhalation when done in the initial stages of a cold, can prevent the occurrence of a stuffed up nose and make the patient more comfortable. For this, heat some water in a vessel till it boils.

Steam

Take it off the gas and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to it. Cover your head with a towel and immerse your head in the vessel, keeping your face at a safe distance such that you do not scald yourself.

Inhale the steam, taking deep breaths. Do this for 20 minutes or till the steam evaporates. While this is tedious, this is one of the most effective home remedies for a stuffy nose.

Neti Pot Treatment

A neti pot can be used to clear up the nose. Heat water till it is luke warm. To it add 2 teaspoons of salt and place the salt and water solution in a neti pot.

Saline Drops

You can also make saline drops at home with salt and water and place 1-2 drops in both of your nostrils to clear the nose. Saline drops soften the mucous, allow your nose to drain and also help to flush out the bacteria from the nose.

Hot Shower

Open up the shower nozzle in your showering cubicle and ensure that the water is piping hot. Turn off the shower after 5 minutes, once the steam has sufficiently built up in the cubicle.

Hot Shower

Now stand in this cubicle for 10 minutes. The steam from the shower can ease your congestion. Alternately, you can also take a shower and inhale the steam at the same time.

Drink Hot Fluids

One way of clearing a clogged nose is to keep sipping on hot fluids throughout the day. Have hot tea, chicken soup and warm water to clear your nose and get rid of any residual infection.

Eat Spicy Foods

Foods which have black pepper and cayenne pepper are excellent for opening up a stuffy nose. The heat from the spices enhances mucous build up and this in turn helps your nose to drain thus easing congestion.
