Long hair is good to look at, always in fashion and the dream of any girl! But at the same time long hair is also very hard to maintain. The surrounding pollution, the hurried lifestyle we lead and lack of nutrition in daily diet lead to damaged long locks affected by split ends, frizziness or dandruff! Here we give you simple tips on how to take care of long hair so that your tresses look healthy and gorgeous.
Tips to Care for Long Hair
Wash Hair Regularly
Wash your hair at least twice a week, sometimes more often, especially if you have very oily hair or have to remain outdoors for a long time during the day. Remember that the longer your hair is, the more will it attract dust and dirt.
Use the Right Type of Shampoos and Conditioners
Do not compromise on your hair care items. Use shampoos that are specially formulated for your hair type. Read the labels to differentiate between shampoos for dry, oily and normal hair. Massage your scalp while rubbing the shampoo. Do not rub in conditioner. Spread evenly on top of hair, paying special attention to the lower ends of long hair strands. Tie the hair in a bun after applying conditioner before washing off after five minutes. People who have curly or dry long hair must consider using a leave in conditioner.
Watch the Water Temperature
Never use hot water to wash your hair. This causes breakage in dry hair and stickiness in oily hair. Styling damaged long hair becomes very difficult. First wash with lukewarm water and then rinse off shampoo and conditioner thoroughly with cool water.
Hair Drying Techniques
Use a very soft towel or an old t-shirt to dry hair. Just press the t-shirt against wet hair to squeeze out excess water. Do not rub cloth on hair. Also do not wrap towel in hair for drying.
The friction may lead to damage especially if you have dry hair. Also avoid using a blow dryer until an emergency requires you to dry hair really quickly. Allow long hair to dry naturally.
Hair Combing Techniques
Long hair takes time to untangle and comb properly. Invest the time at least two times a day to avoid damage. Use a wide toothed comb to remove the tangles, combing from the root to the tip of each strand. Do not pull at hair as you comb. Use hairbrushes which have soft bristles.
Use Clean Hair Accessories
Merely keeping long hair clean will not do. If your combs and hairbrushes are dirty, they lead to dirty hair! So remember to rinse hair accessories in shampoo and water once a week to keep them free from dirt. If dirt from the accessories settles on your scalp, it will lead to loosening of hair roots and premature hair fall.
Trim Hair Frequently
If you have long hair it means that your hair grows fast. In order to avoid hair problems such as split ends, remember to trim the ends of hair at least once a month. The trimming interval, however, depends upon the rate of hair growth.
