Acne is the bane of many youths and adults. Apart from disfiguring one’s face while those disgusting pustules and inflamed skin persists, they quite often tend to leave behind scars that are very hard to get rid of.
If scars were not bad enough, there are acne pits, or dents in the skin that are left behind. These can take months, years, or even a lifetime to get rid of. Embarrassment, low self esteem and social withdrawal are just some side effects of acne and acne pits. While there are a number of remedies for acne, dealing with acne pits is much more complex.
There are therapies such as dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, laser treatment and using chemical peels. However, these can be quite expensive and there are cases in which there are negative side effects, wherein the end result makes your skin worse than it was before going in for treatment.
While eliminating acne scars and pits completely is quite a challenge, there is much that you can do to get rid of the scars, reduce the more shallow pits, and to make the bigger acne pits less noticeable. Keep in mind, though, that it might take a while for noticeable results to be seen. However, persistence and the right skin care regimen will help you in the long run.
Your skin is constantly renewing itself. The outer layers die every few days and the new, fresh layers slowly move to the top. When you exfoliate your skin, you remove the dead skin and help reveal the fresh new skin beneath it. Apart from this, exfoliation helps tone the skin and makes it smooth.
Blood circulation is improved and your skin begins to glow. Acne scars tend to reduce in intensity and depth with regular exfoliation, ideally done twice a week. Exfoliation also tends to reduce the extent of open pores and improves the clarity of your skin.
Get Sufficient Sleep
Your body rejuvenates itself while you sleep. Your skin is the biggest organ of your body, and much of the repair that happens to it, occurs while you sleep. Therefore, it is vital to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Getting sufficient sleep will keep your skin glowing, your metabolism working perfectly, and your body’s ability to heal itself is enhanced. This aids, to a large extent, in working towards getting rid of acne scars and pits.
Make Dietary Changes
In order to get clear skin, you need to heal your skin from within. There are a number of creams and lotions in the market that claim to aid in getting rid of acne scars and pits. While these might work, the damage that is on the inside is not targeted by topical solutions.
Therefore, target your skin from the inside for long terms results. Foods that are rich in vitamins A, C and E will boost skin healing to a great extent. Adding whole grains to your food and using healthy oils will help to a large extent. Apart from this, snack on almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts and other seeds and nuts that are rich in vitamin E.
These are excellent skin healing snacks and boost your body’s ability to heal itself from within. The results derived by means of these are long lasting and more effective. Also, ensure that you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Water flushes out impurities and helps your skin glow.
Cut Out On Makeup
While makeup can camouflage flaws on your skin, it can also cause your skin to age ahead of time. Apart from that, makeup can get into open pores and pitted skin, and can even cause more outbreaks of acne. Allow time and space for your skin to breathe in order for it to heal itself.
If you absolutely need to use makeup, limit it to a mild, medicated moisturizer, and light eye and lip makeup. Stick to this for as long as you have a problem with acne scars. The chemicals present in makeup – even the ones that claim to be completely natural or herbal – can do you more harm than good.
In some cases, these chemicals can inhibit the healing process as well. Therefore, avoid the temptation to slather on layers of makeup, if you want to enjoy clear and smooth skin.
Use Solutions From The Kitchen
Using solutions from the kitchen will help you get rid of acne scars to a large extent. While there are a number of products in the market that claim to be “natural”, there is no way in which you can really be sure that they are natural. The best way to be sure is to use products from the kitchen. Consider, for instance, the following four kitchen items that you can use.
(a) Lemon juice is excellent in getting rid of acne scars and spots. The acidic nature of lemon juice helps accelerate the healing process. It is also a good bleaching agent when used in conjunction with honey, and can be very effective on dark scars left over by acne.
(b) Baking soda is a wonderful product. Apart from being beneficial around the house, it has immense benefits on the skin. Mixing a paste of baking soda and water and applying it on your skin thrice a week for just ten minutes, will give you amazing results.
Baking soda not only lightens scars, but also tones your skin and exfoliates it. With each application of this, you will see noticeable results. Used over time, baking soda can get rid of acne pits to a great extent, with the exception of those that have cut through many layers of skin.
(c) Tomato is rich in antioxidants and has a similar acidic effect as that of lemon juice. It helps tighten your skin, tone it, and reduce open pores. Just take a few minutes to rub a slice of tomato directly on your skin and wash it off after 15 minutes. The results will be visible right from the first application.
(d) Potato is very useful in lightening dark marks left over by acne. Make a paste of raw potato in a blender and apply a bit of this on to your skin. Ensure that it does not get into your eyes as this could be dangerous to your sight. Wash off the potato mask after 15 minutes, and enjoy the results.
