This is the main reason why many people who have outgrown their dreadlock style, cut the locks off to re-grow their hair. If you wish to keep your hair intact after a dreadlock style then you must learn how to untwist dreads. There are a number of styling tools available in the market that will help you to untwist your locks.
Follow the instructions below for unscrewing your locks without damaging the hair strands.
Set Aside Time For The Process
Untwisting the locks is a time consuming job. It is therefore advisable, that you finish all your important tasks before sitting to unwind the locks. You can also ask a friend to help you out as sometimes the locks can get unmanageable to handle by yourself.
Unwind One Lock At A Time
Use a pony tail holder to set aside all the locks except one. It is advisable that the locks near the nape be unwound before the upper locks. This makes it easy to manage the hair that gets released as you unwind them.
Using A Stylus To Unwind The Locks
Embossing styluses of various shapes and sizes are available in the market. The stylus makes it easy to unfold the dreadlocks without creating tangles in the hair strands. It is advisable that you refrain from using combs as combs can cause your hair locks to get tousled and unmanageable.
Take hold of a single dreadlock. Place it in between the index and thumb finger. Hold the embossing stylus in your hand and work with the stylus on small sections of the dreadlock. Be patient and open one dreadlock at a time.
When unwinding the dreadlocks, start from the tip of the single hair lock. Slowly apply the stylus end to unfold the parts of the lock twist. A stylus actually picks apart the strands of twisted hair till the root is reached.
Care For The Untwisted Hair
Another important step about how to untwist dreads is the maintenance of the released hair. Remember that while the twists required low maintenance, the hair strands have been kept in an abnormal position for a long period of time in the process. Moreover, cleaning and conditioning is not possible when the hair strands remain twisted. This is the reason why some extra care has to be taken to regain the moisture of the strands.
Wash the hair thoroughly with the help of a mild shampoo. Apply a good conditioner on it and then a good amount of moose to keep it from forming knots. Refrain from using a blow dryer to dry the hair. Instead, allow it to dry naturally. Once the hair gets dried up, restrain yourself from styling them again very soon. Allow the hair roots to regain their natural strength before you apply color or start to style them again.
