We smile with the lips. We kiss with the lips. So you can see, this small organ does some major work for us. Without proper care, our lips can be damaged. They can crack and worst of all, become discoloured. To prevent any of that from happening, you need to take care of your lips.
Before moving on to lip care, it is better that you know something about the skin of the lips. The skin on the lips is very thin, much thinner than the skin on the entire body. And the striking feature of this skin is that it does not have any sweat gland and the number of oil glands on the lips is very small.
For this reason, lips can get dry very easily. But there are other reasons lips can become dry. The reasons are
Not drinking enough water to keep the body well hydrated.
If you smoke.
If your body lacks certain vitamins such as vitamins A, B and C.
If you take too much of alcohol or caffeinated drinks.
Cosmetics can also make the lips dry.
Here are a few tips that will help you out if you have a dilemma.
Brush your lips with a soft brush every other day. That will get rid of all the dead cells on the lips, leaving them soft and supple. But make sure you do not brush them too hard.
Apply lip balm at all times. It will prevent your lips from cracking. If you are wearing lipstick, apply a coat of lip balm or Chap Stick before applying the lipstick.
Drink a good amount of water daily. That will keep your body hydrated, thus your lips will not become dry and crack. Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco. They make the lips turn black, making them look deeply unattractive. If you are a smoker or have the habit of chewing tobacco, this is high time you gave up that habit.
Cosmetic can also affect the colour of your lips. Use a lip colour that is not just rich in moisturizer but at the same time has an SPF 15. That will protect the lips from the heat of the sun.
