If you want to parent more than one child, you may be concerned with not knowing how far apart in age they should be. This can bring up many questions such as how long should I give my body to heal or should the first baby be a certain age before I try to get pregnant again.
It is recommended that you wait at least till the first baby is around 14 months old. Your body needs a rest after the first go around so that it can heal and recover. If you are breastfeeding, this will also give your breasts a chance to recover as well. They are going to be tender and sore so you don’t want to over do it. It can also help to keep the production of milk under control.
When it comes to the waiting period, this is a good idea for a number of reasons. You want to be healthy and strong for the next pregnancy and delivery and if your not, than you can risk low birth weight and even a pre-mature birth. Your weight is also a concern. It is not important to be back in those skinny clothes but it is important to be at a reasonable weight. But, if you are healthy, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
If you are considering another birth, one great reason to have them close together is that the older you get, the more risk you take. You have a chance of a high risk pregnancy the older you become. There is a greater risk of high blood pressure miscarriage. The risk to the baby’s health also becomes greater.
There are some benefits to having them farther apart though. It may be easier to get rid of the baby fat for one. The other is that you will have a built in baby sitter. This doesn’t always work out the way that you want it to but, it can be really helpful to have an older sibling around that can help you with the baby.
