apricotIt is now very difficult to say which fruit and vegetable is out of season and which one is in season since they could be imported from all over the world to the supermarket near you.

That means that you can buy all kinds of fruits and vegetables all year round. However, there is a difference between fruits bought during the local season and those imported.

Those imported had to be harvested earlier so that they could ripen on the way. Further, these imported fruits and vegetables are expensive as compared to those that are locally grown. That is why you should adopt the practice of seasonal eating.

The advantages of seasonal eating are that you eat foods that are picked when they are ripe or very close to the peak of ripening. They spend just a short time on their way to the supermarket. It is also cheap because you buy the food without the shipping cost. You might now be wondering how you can practice this.

You can start in the summer when fruits and vegetables are at the peak of their production. You can try with the following fruits which are common in the supermarket.

Apricots

Apricots were being cultivated in China around 3,000 BC but were popular in Armenia before that time. They contain a lot of iron and Vitamin A. They are great for snacks during summer.

Berries

Summer is the season for most berries such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. They contain high amounts of anti-oxidants and their flavor is just great. There are scientific views that berries boost brain power.

Cherries

It is believed that cherries originated from ancient Persia and have been in cultivation for many thousands of years. They make a great snack and contain lots of Vitamin C. They are also a source of anthocyanins, which act as pain relievers in combination with anti-oxidants.

Figs

They contain a lot of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. They are best enjoyed with goat cheese and basil. They are native of the Mediterranean region.

The best time to enjoy all these fruits is when they are in season.
