Eat Right and Drink Plenty of Water

The first thing to know is that healthy hair begins from the inside out. Eating right, getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated are some of the key components to a healthy body. It has recently been under debate about how much water we should drink. Some say 8 ounces a day, while others recommend drinking half your weight in ounces.

For example, a person weighing 130 pounds should drink 65 ounces of water every day. That may sound like a lot, especially to those that barely get the original 8 ounces. But it is important to stay hydrated. So starting with the 8 ounces may be a good first step, and you can slowly increase the daily intake.

Watch the Heat

It is also important to know when your hair has had enough heat. Curlers, blow dryers and flat irons make our hair look great for the moment but it is essential to consider the long-term effects of these tools. Help your hair to stand up to the heat with a protecting cream, spray or serum. Available at most drug and beauty supply stores, they also help with taming flyaway hair and frizz.

Reduce Product Build-Up

Watching the build-up of residue from best hair products is also an important aspect to developing healthy hair. Build-up of hair spray, creams, mousse, etc can weigh down your hair, causing brittle hair to break from the slightest touch. It is important to cleanse the hair completely. Reducing the amount of product build-up will give hair a livelier look and feel.

Some Shampoo Ingredients Do More Harm Than Good

Another piece of important knowledge is shampoo ingredients. Some companies use industrial strength ingredients because they are inexpensive. These chemicals cause your hair to be dry and brittle, which causes breakage. Find a shampoo that does not contain harsh ingredients.

More Tips to Stop Breakage

Once you have the healthy hair that you desire, there are certain things that can be done to maintain it. Sleeping with a silk scarf or on satin pillow will decrease breakage.

Use elastic bands that do not have metal closures. The metal often becomes caught in the hair and breaks off strands. After washing, detangle with a wide tooth comb because hair is more susceptible to breaking when wet. With these simple changes, everyone can have healthy hair for a lifetime.
