The early adolescence period is usually from 10 to 13 years when a girl experiences puberty. In this period, a girl needs privacy and independence. The girls become confident in this period and consider other adults as role models. From 14 years to 16 years is the period of middle adolescence. In this stage, girls develop a peer network. A major cognitive development occurs and the girls acquire knowledge, skills, and problem-solving ability. During this period a girl becomes very energetic and demands control over life. The middle-adolescence period is the period of developing adult identity. The late adolescence period is about 17 to 19 years when an adolescent tries to stay separate from her parents. This period is about emotional independence when a girl demands freedom from the emotional support of her parents. In this stage, a girl develops the decision-making ability and the adult identity continues to develop.
Puberty is the series of physical and emotional changes that a girl experiences when growing up from a child to a teenager and ultimately into a woman. Puberty starts at a different time in different girls, however, puberty usually begins from 8 years to 13 years.
The release of different hormones regulates puberty and led to the changes in breast, ovaries, and uterus. The two main events of puberty are gonadarche and adrenarche. Gonadarche occurs when Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH) activate the gonads. In the case of adrenarche, the adrenal cortex increases the production of androgens dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The androgenic hormones help in the development of acne and the maturation of the sweat glands.
At the beginning of puberty, breasts start to develop. In the initial phase, a little swelling under the nipple can be experienced. While the breast budding begins with a little amount of breast tissue, the enlargement process of the breasts continues for several years. In the later stages, the nipple forms as a mound over the breast tissue. The large size of breasts with a single contour is achieved at the final stage of the development.
During puberty, the shape of the body changes with the appearance of curves, and hips and thighs become wider. Naturally, a girl can gain weight during puberty.
Pubic hair growth is another characteristic that occurs during the period of puberty. However, the type and distribution of hair differ in different ages. In this period, hair starts to grow near the labia, underarms, and on the legs.
A girl also experiences a growth in height. This growth spurt occurs rapidly and the height of a girl increases by three inches per year. After the two years of first menstruation, the growth of the girls usually stops.
However, the change in the height, weight, growth of hair, and size of breasts depends on the genes of the girl.
Menstruation is a process of vaginal bleeding that a girl experiences every month. Usually, the menstrual period starts after two years from the beginning of the formation of the breasts. During menstruation, blood and tissue come out from the inside of the uterus. Although many girls experience menstruation from teenage, some can experience menstruation from nine or ten years of age. Menstruation is a very normal thing and it indicates that the body is preparing for the pregnancy.
For most girls, the menstrual cycle ranges from 21 days to 35 days.
At the beginning of the menstruation period, a girl may experience irregularity. However, that is very common and the regularity in menstruation starts after the two years from first menstruation.
Every menstrual cycle consists of an event called ovulation when an egg gets released from any of the ovaries. In the prior days of ovulation, the level of estrogen increases that led to the uterine lining and body thickness. This way, the uterus becomes prepared for the possible pregnancy.
